The beer market shrunk 3% in 2008.

“Two percentage points of this can be attributed to price hikes,” Kirin Brewery Co. President Senji Miyake says.

The beer market is down 16% from its 1994 peak.

Asahi Breweries is the industry leader and forecasts the market will contract 1-2%.

Second-ranked Kirin is projecting a 3% decline.

Suntory Ltd. and Sapporo Breweries Ltd. are each predicting a drop of about 2%.

Meanwhile -

Kirin Brewery Co. will start offering a nonalcoholic drink in the spring that tastes like beer.I don’t know why anyone would want to drink the stuff just for the taste.

The new brand is called – The Free.

The Free is is Kirin’s contribution to curb drunken driving.

Beer-flavored drinks normally use beer yeast, generating a small amount of alcohol. But the Free achieves its beer flavor without using beer yeast.

So, why does beer go through the body so quickly?

Answer – the drink doesn’t need to stop and change color before it goes out.

It’s an electric car with a body made out of bamboo.

The car weighs sixty-kilogram (132lbs).

It’s a single-seater ecologically friendly concept car.

It measures 270 centimeters (8’9″) in length, 130 centimeters (4’3″) in width and 165 centimeters (5’5″) in height.

It was made of bamboo articles in the Kyoto area.

The car can run for 50 kilometers (30 miles) on a single charge.

Sapporo Breweries wants to grab all the attention it can in Japan’s saturated beer market, while the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry figures out how to push a carbon footprinting system.

Japan’s three largest breweries saw an 8.8% drop in sales. #4 Suntory posted 26% rise.

“We’re number 4! We’re number 4!”

Kirin Beer, however, is breathing down its neck with a share of 37.6%.

The five top breweries in Japan shipped 497.5 million 20 bottle cases in 2006, down for the second straight year but by just 0.7%.

That is enough for every man, woman and child to drink 83 bottles of beer…on the wall…83 bottles of beer. Take one down and…asahi.beer.jpg

Asahi's Super Dry was the best with 132.6 million case, or more than 20 bottles per person.

Kirin had the next three top sellers but still total sales did not reach Asahi's number one. Kirin's Lager brand was number five.

Sake? Beer? Sake? Beer? Liguor is the oil that keeps Japan's society lubicated, it is said. And it seems to be running quite smoothly.
