Sony Displays New Organic Light Emitting Display - XEL-1
Sony Corp. displayed the first television for the commercial market with an organic light-emitting diode display (Organic Electroluminescence (EL)).
The display is an ultra-thin flat TV based on the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology and a new contender to the $82 billion market now dominated by LCD and plasma TVs.
The XEL-1 will go on sale in Japan on Dec. 1st for 200,000 ($1,700).
Overseas sales are undecided.
The technology is superior because:![]()
1. "OLED technology uses materials that emit light on their own and don't require a back light."
2. "relayz video 1,000 times faster than liquid crystal displays
3. "eliminates the blur of LCD TV imagery"
4. "reduces energy consumption by 40 percent"
Sony's president said - "The world's first OLED TV is a symbol of the rebirth of Sony with its superb technology."
Maybe so, but until they become bigger and cheaper and last longer (more than 10 years) they won't make too huge an impact.![]()
Or, will they?
