Solar Cell Production Target – 180% by 2010

Japan's solar energy system maker Kyocera Corp says it will increase its annual production of solar cells by 180% within the next three years.

30 billion yen will be invested to expand overseas assembly plants and turn out more parts at home.

New facilities will be built in Mie prefecture at home as well as in the Czech Republic, Mexico and China.

Kyocera is the world's third largest solar cell manufacturer and as a result ofsolarcell.jpg efforts to promote adoption of solar power generation in Europe, is enjoying great demand there.

I put solar panels on our roof in Niigata back in the 80s. It worked well about 6-8 months of the year. The rest of the time, the prefecture was too cloudy.

What do you think of solar power?

Solar energy is definitely viable, but cells are fairly expensive. Of course it won’t work well all the time (especially in more northern places), but in conjunction with conventional electricity can save alot of money and environmental strain. It just depends on if you want to make an investment.
