Video Game Leads to Suicide

Posted by Bill Belew on September 27th, 2007 in Japan | No Comments

Suicide is a problem in Japan…a BIG problem.

Even the youngsters, think teenagers will too readily take the leap…and in this case, literally.

A 15-year old boy got in a fight with his older brother over a video game.

Later that day, a woman saw someone jump from a 50-storey apartment building at about 9:10pm.

The police found the 15-year old boy lying on the ground having made an exit

from the 43rd floor. He jumped off the veranda attached to the apartment.suicide.jump.jpg

I know things about Japan and perhaps if I sat and thought about it long and hard enough I might come up with an opinion, but the truth is I don't know why these fine people are so relatively quick to give up on their lives.

Does anyone else have any insight?

Bill – the whole “suicidal Japanese” thing is a stereotype. Conjures up images of kamikaze pilots and seppuku (harakiri). Sure suicide is a problem in Japan – but suicide is a problem everywhere it happens, and Japan isn’t at the top of that list to begin with. Go check out TPR’s Suicide in Japan by the Numbers. It’s worth a read / listen. :-)
