Toyota Announces No Plans for New Factory in India
Japan's respected Nihon Keizai Business Newspaper reported that Toyota was going to invest up 50 billion yen to build a second factory in India to produce 100,000 small cars.
I trusted Nikkei…and, well, I was wrong.
A Toyota spokeman says no decision has been made regarding India.
"We don't have any concrete plans for a new plant in India," is pretty clear.
Toyota is considering an entry-level car to penetrate developing areas ….BRIC – Brazil, Russia, India and China but, once again, nothing has been decided.
Toyota has only a 4% market share in India compared to Japanese Suzuki which has about half the market share in small, fuel-efficient autos.
Sooner or later, Toyota will make another move in India….and neither Suzuki nor any other car maker will be happy to see them there.
