Toyota Announces No Plans for New Factory in India

Japan's respected Nihon Keizai Business Newspaper reported that Toyota was going to invest up 50 billion yen to build a second factory in India to produce 100,000 small cars.

I trusted Nikkei…and, well, I was wrong.

A Toyota spokeman says no decision has been made regarding India.

"We don't have any concrete plans for a new plant in India," is pretty clear.

Toyota is considering an entry-level car to penetrate developing areas ….BRIC – Brazil, Russia, India and China but, once again, nothing has been decided.

Toyota has only a 4% market share in India compared to Japanese Suzuki which has about half the market share in small, fuel-efficient autos.

Sooner or later, Toyota will make another move in India….and neither Suzuki nor any other car maker will be happy to see them there.

What do you think?
