Toshiba Opts out of Music Business
Toshiba Corp is getting out of the music business.
The company announced it will sell its entire stake in the Japanese label Toshiba EMI to Britain's EMI Group Plc.
The electronics giant is saying that music is no longer relevant.
The sale will net Toshiba about $179 million.
Before the sale, Toshiba owned 45% of the company and Britain's EMI group owned the other 55%.![]()
Toshiba primarily handled domestic artists but also distributed some fairly well known British groups – the Beatles for example.
Toshiba is making money in its electronics business but mostly in the energy field. Two months ago, Toshiba shelled out $5.4 billion to buy nuclear power plant maker Westinghouse from British Nuclear Fields.
Toshiba's new strategy – electronics and energy.
Toshiba shares dropped .52%.
So, which is a better bet – energy or entertainment? Tough call.
