Tokyo Electric Power Co. opened the cover of one of the nuclear reactors at their Kashiwazaki-Kariwas Nuclear Power plant.

The reactor was badly damaged by a powerful earthquake in mid-July.

Four reactors were in operation when the earthquake hit, including this one – No. 7.

The cover which blocks radiation is 13 meters in diameter and 2 meters thick.

Fuel rods and other devices will be removed by the end of the month.

After which, an underwater camera will be inserted to see what's up inside.no.7.nuke.reactor.jpg

Small amounts of radiation leaked through the reactors exhaust pipe.

The other three reactors will be similarly examined by the end of the year.
