Superman, Harry Potter, The Matrix – Too Boring for Japanese
Superman is not super enough to hold the attention of Japanese kids. Harry Potter’s magic isn’t sufficiently powerful, either. Even Neo is not savior enough
A typical family in Japan might see 2-3 kids online simultaneously in two or three chat rooms on more than one PC with the TV on while talking on their cell phones or doing text messaging.
"It’s boring to just watch a movie."
Last year 160 million tickets to movies were purchased in Japan by its 120 million people…just 1.25 times a year per person.
Still Hollywood doesn’t want to give up.
Two Clint Eastwood directed flicks on Iwo Jima, one from the US side – "Flags of Our Fathers" – opening in October and "Letters from Iwo Jima" opening in December are due out.
Acquisitions of local films such as the Chinese Film "Hero" or the South Korean remake of Japan’s own "Sekai no Chushin de Ai wo Sakebu" (Crying Out Love in the Center of the World) are somewhat popular in Japan.
But home and portable video is where it is at. If Hollywood could put a movie on a screen that the Japanese could watch in the palms of their hand, while text messaging…now THAT would go over, I think. Or would it?
What do you think?

it is strange that we can’t just sit and watch something anymore. i guess the more distractions you have, the more distracted you will be. what will this be like in five or ten years, i wonder. i still like to relax and just watcha movie though.
