Studying in Japan (part 2)

Japan has seen a huge increase in international students (+54% ) since 1998. And yet, thanks to a declining Japanese population, the odds for first year students to enroll in a Japanese university are about 100%

If you have read part 1 of this post and know which university you want to apply to, it is very likely you’ll have to write an application letter. Here are some tips to get you started.

  1. Be professional. Japanese do not use conversational styles in formal letters.
  2. At the top of the letter, write the date (in traditional year-month-day format) and the address of the university.
  3. Japanese do not get straight to the point, not even in business letters. Start with an introduction saying something about the weather or asking how they are.
  4. Give a brief introduction of who you are.
  5. Explain why you choose this particular university & subject
  6. Write what an excellent student you are, e.g: why they should choose you.
  7. Finish thanking the reader for his/her time and let them know how to reach you.

Good luck!
