Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea was the largest producer of non-computer DRAMs (dynamic random access memory chips for consumer and graphic applications) in 2006.

Sony Corp and Germany's Qimonda have formed a 50-50 joint venture called Qreatic Design which will be based in Tokyo to challenge the global leader.

Qimonda is happy to be working in cahoots with Sony and Sony is happy to be securing DRAM chips for its consumer electronics products and to be focusing more on chips where it can maintain high profit margins.

The two companies will supply some 30 'specialists' each.dram.sony.jpg

The other big DRAM makers are:

Elpida Memory Inc.

Micron Technology Inc.

and Hynix Semiconductor.

One thing is for sure – makers of the graphic and consumer DRAM chips will be competing more fiercely.

And, that's good news for the consumer, no?
