More people are coming to Japan to shop than to experience the culture.

A private study by  the Japan National Tourist Organization has learned that big spending Japanese tourists are finally getting a return from their overseas investment trips.

In 2003, experiencing the traditional culture and historical sites was the number one reason for visitors.

This year – 35% say they came to Japan to shop till they drop.

For visitors from Japan's neighbors –

Taiwan

Hong Kong

shopping was among the top three reasons for coming.

Hong Kongese – 71% came to shop.

The average tourist spent 280,000 ($2,400).

For Americans and Brits – Japan's traditional culture and lifestyle remained the top attraction.

More than 50% of Asians who travelled to Japan came more than once. Just 15-30% of western tourists come back for seconds.

Japan has

1. aired television commercials abroad

2. waived visa requirements

3. expanded amenities for tourists

in a bid to attract 10 million visitors in 2010.

Last year 4.98 million visitors came to Japan as tourists.

What's 4.98 million X $2,400 each?

A lot.

Have you ever visited Japan?
