Ring of Fire Volcano Near Tokyo Erupts – Mount Asama
Mount Asama is a volcano near Tokyo. It erupted early Monday morning spewing a plume of smoke more than a mile (1.6 kilometers) high. It also rained ash down on parts of the city. There were no reports of injuries or damage.
Mount Asama is located about 90 miles (145 kilometers) northwest of Tokyo. The eruption occurred at 1:51 am (0451 GMT) Monday says Japan’s Meteorological Agency.
Volcanic rocks were found about 3,300 feet (1,000 meters) away.
Ash fell on parts of Tokyo.
An alert level of three gets people to thinking about what might happen. Alert level four advises residents to prepare for evacuation. Level five is the highest and orders evacuation.
Mount Asama’s last eruption took place in September 2004.
Japan has 108 active volcanos and is among the most seismically busy countries in the world.
The country lies in the “Ring of Fire” — a series of volcanoes and fault lines that outline the Pacific Ocean.
