Red Sox Near Deal with Matsuzaka Daisuke

The Red Sox put up $51.1 million for the right to just talk to Matsuzaka. The boy is a good ball player. But nobody is that good.

Still Boston is close to sealing the deal. A ‘fair’ and ‘comprehensive’ offer is on the table.

Matsuzaka has till Dec. 15th to sign with the Red Sox, or go back to Japan for another year and then try his luck as a free agent.

If that happens, the Seibu Lions would have to return the $51 million and watch their star go for nothing, nada, zip, zilch.

But…but…before that happens, the Lions could offer to return some of the $51 million to the Red Sox…enough so that the one in 86 year winners could somehow seal a deal AND the Lions could come out ahead.

Interesting…

There is talk of the two clubs making someo sort of a long term ‘working relationship.’ That means the Lions will send future stars to the Red Sox, and the Red Sox will give them old stars with a year or two of punch left over.

Baseball is business…in America and in Japan.

What do you think?
