Question # 60 – How much can I get paid to work extra when teaching ESL in Japan?

Private lessons on the sly can be taught for various amounts – Y2,000 to Y6,000 an hour.

If you can form a class of your own and find a place to seat 4-6 students who will pay Y2-3000 each, a teacher can make Y10,000 in an hour. But, the teacher has to do the leg work, make the calls, collect the money, decide the curriculum, make the commute…all those things.

So, the teacher is thinking…my boss is charging these guys Y3000/hr to take my lesson and there are 6-8 people here…and I am onlyesl.japan-thumb.gif getting Y3000 of that?!

Yeah, that’s why running a language school can be profitable.

It’s also hard work.

There might also be no-compete clauses in the teacher’s contract to keep the teacher from striking out on their own.

But, if the teacher can do it, they can make some pretty good money at it.
