Question # 57 – Is it expensive to travel when teaching ESL in Japan?

It is very expensive to travel in Japan. Tokyo taxis, mile for mile, or kilometer for kilometer as the case may be, are the most expensive mode of transportation on the planet.

It is NOT any cheaper to travel by car than it is to go by bullet train, local train or plane either.

We calculated over and over again that you need 3-4 people in your car before it becomes cheaper than all of you and your

buddies just taking the train to go to your destination.

From Niigata to Tokyo is about 200 miles, but it is still across country and the fare for the bullet train were ‘cross country prices.’

I can travel across the United States and back for $300 (offesl.japan-thumb.gif season).

It can cost $250 to travel from Niigata to Tokyo and back.

Yeah…it’s expensive to travel in Japan.

Oh, last time I checked, gasoline was about Y150/liter = $5.00/gal.

Right, European countries will think, and that’s expensive?
