Question # 53 – Is it safe living in Japan when teaching ESL in Japan?
The Japanese live there, don’t they?
One of the questions or statements I grew tired of hearing or being asked was “Is it dangerous to live in NYC or SF or wherever in America?”
I always responded that if NYC is so dangerous, why do 10+ million people live there?
And 6 million people live in the Bay Area? The real question is why 400K peo
ple live in Oakland, CA, but that’s another issue.
Japan is safe.
Does that mean the police are competent? Not, at all….not in my book.
They are so thorough, to the point of being obnoxious that some people who have been violated, burglarized will NOT call the police so as to not have to deal with them.
It depends on the severity of the crime.
Japan is not as safe as the country lets on but it is safe.![]()
When you have half the population of the United States living in a place the size of Southern CA, you have to get along or everyone will know what you did wrong.
Still…when my kids were growing up in the countryside of Japan, they used to run around outside and play. Kids cannot do that anymore.
Japan is safe, relative to many other countries, but not as safe as it used to be.
Have you ever experienced a crime in Japan?
At least one person, her friends, family and students might not agree with me.
