Question # 48 – What happens if I get sick when teaching ESL in Japan?
If you get sick, a cold for example, you can take a bunch of cold medicine and get better in a week, or do nothing but tough it out and it takes about seven days.
Medical care in Japan is among the best. Many doctors are trained in the West, though their English is not indicative of what they learned…we hope.
If the Japanese can’t treat it, and there’s not much that can’t be treated, you can always get on a plane and go home.
We had a girl working us from down under. She had a clogged colon…seriously.
Whenever she had to ‘relieve’ herself between classes, EVERYBODY knew it. We ended up going to the doctor and I had the task of translating for her AND seeing what was up, clogged up, literally.
She ended up going back home.
Another friend had TMJ, lock jaw or some variant of it….she was treated over the course of years…for free….She’s better now.
Japan’s health care is among the best in the world.
What is the most serious sickness you have faced?
