Question # 34 Will my apartment be furnished when teaching ESL in Japan?

Generally speaking, yes, depending on who you are working for…that would NOT be NOVA as I write this.

But, think smaller size. I had to order a futon specially made to accommodate my height, but it was a luxury not a necessity.

Chairs have shorter legs, tables, too…but my legs are long…a benefit to attract the opposite sex for reasons only the Japanese know…well, Asians in general like Westerners who have long legs. Go figure!

A little gas stove to cook on. No ovens…Japanese don’t bake like Westerners doesl.japan.gif. All the other basics…they are there.

The general rule of thumb, if the Japanese can get by on the amenities, then why not the teacher of ESL, too?

I had a friend who insisted on bringing this HUGE hall tree from the States when she came to Japan….at not a little expense. It was a wedding present or something like that. Two years after teaching in Japan, she left to return home and the hall tree stayed in Japan.

If it won’t fit in your suitcase, you don’t need it.

What is a must have in your home country that you cannot find in Japan?
