Question # 33 – Do I use public transportation when teaching ESL in Japan?
You can go anywhere, practically anywhere by public transportation in Japan…especially in the big cities.
In the countryside, it might take you forever to get to a place, but even then, by train and by bus the country is within reach.
In the city, trains will run every couple of minutes depending on the time of the day and the destination.
Frankly, living in the big city, I cannot understand why anyone would want private transportation. It can cost more to park your car than to pay for it. Whereas
public transportation costs can add up, but there are no insurance or maintenance fees.
In the countryside…a car can be more convenient. By bus and by train, what might take two hours to get to can be gotten to in a half the time AND when you want to be there not when the train or bus run.
In any event, stay out of the taxis. I have heard that taking a taxi in Japan, mile for mile, is the most expensive way to travel in the world.
Take the train, but, especially if you are a female, watch out for wandering hands.
How do you get about in Japan?
