Question # 25 Will I be able to study Japanese when I teach ESL in Japan?
Will I be able to study Japanese when I teach ESL in Japan?
Absolutely. The ESL teacher is totally immersed in the culture…or at least should be.
Granted…your students want to learn English and they become your friends because they want to practice 'their English.'
But, 20 hours in the classroom leaves 148 hours a week outside of the classroom that is free game for study and practice.
The Japanese world is right before the ESL teacher. I used to ask people how to get to the train station even I knew how to get to the train station just so I could hear different answers.
I would ask people in the grocery store what things were even I knew what they were. And so on….
I loved learning the language and I NEVER had to worry about finding an opportunity to practice it.![]()
There are two very important necessities when it comes to learn a language – a need to speak and an opportunity to practice the language.
Need an opportunity are waiting for the student at every moment.
If a person goes to live in Japan and does NOT study the language, then they haven't really learned about Japan.
How much time do you plan to study?
