NTT DoCoMo Installs Breath Analyzers in Cell Phones

NTT DoCoMo has developed a cell phone with a breath analyzer installed. Some 15 companies have been using it for about 3 months and other companies are considering it.

The way it works is for a driver to make a video-phone call to his or home company – provided the driver is sober enough to push the right buttons.

The driver then breathes in to the phone. The video confirms to the company that it is the driver doing the blowing.

The home computer then gets an analysis of the alcohol concentration. Too high – red letters flash on the display screen.

The cost is about $2300. But it beats traffic tickets, loss of job and death. It is aimed at long haul drivers and those who have been out ‘on business’ and might not be able to return home.

Now, if only the users are sober enough to remember to use it.

What do you think?
