Nikkei, Asahi, Yomiuri Forge Online News Alliance

Nikkei Inc., Asahi Shimbun Co. and Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings will begin offering their online content on one site created by the three starting next year.

It will surely make my life easier, as I read each of these each morning to find what I want to write about here at RSON.

The move is to heighten the exposure of each.

But…won't it put a damper on it instead? Won't it discourage opinion, and

viewpoints, and perspective?nikkei.net.gif

Each of the three news sites will pony up several hundred million yen.

The content will be free (Nikkei is not free now) and the site supported by ad revenue.

Distribution efforts will be a team affair.

The three, Nikkei, Asahi and Yomiuri are also working on a mutual assistance agreement in the event of an earthquake, computer failure or some other disruption.

Though it is convenient to find all the news in one place, it seems to me there will be less of it.

I think I'd rather screen several newspapers than one big one. In one big news site, the editors have too much power.

What do you think?
