Let’s Hear it for High Priced Food
"Let's hear it for high priced food" might be the chant of Japan's rice farmers.
With the high price of wheat, bread and pasta products and the unpredictability of stuff (cardboard dumplings…) coming out of China, Japan is returning to her staple – rice.
And,the rice growers and Japan's farm ministry are the happier for it.
Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries launched a ¥200 million ($2 mil) ad campaign to urge Japanese to eat more rice. Kind of reminds me of the Chik-Filet cow. "Eat mor chikin'."
Rice consumption is up in Japan. Sales of rice flavoring (furikaka, ochatsuke) is up. Sales of ingredients for home-cooked meals are up.
No more storing of rice while much of the world goes hu
ngry. Japan can eat it without feeling guilty instead of just hoarding it, eh?
