Kenichi Horie’s 110-Day Wave Powered Journey

Kenichi Horie is a Japanese sailor. He’s an environmentalist and adventurer, too. He is also going on 70-years old. (Septemeber).

He started on a journey from Hawaii to Japan aboard his Suntory Mermaid II and landed in Japan 110 days later using nothing but wave power.

He got the idea to use the waves

“Twenty years ago while sailing, an accident broke my main mast which actually fell in the sea. The boat kept rocking and I thought how great it would be to actually harness the power of those waves to push the boat forward.”

Kenichi Horie landed between the main islands of Honshu and Shikoku around midnight July 5th, having covered some 7,000 kilometers (3,780 nautical miles).

I’ve always said that if you fall out of a boat, all you need to do is stay afloat long enough and sooner or later the currents will take you near land…if the sharks don’t get you first.

Travelling in a two hull boat like the Suntory Mermaid II is to be preferred, I would think.
