Just in Case – Don’t Take the Elevator

Posted by Bill Belew on June 18th, 2007 in Japan | No Comments

Here's a figure that surprised me. There are roughly 500,000 elevators in Japan.

They are operated by five major elevator companies.

About one in 12,500 of the elevators had partially fractured cables in the past year.

The question is – is it an elevator that you were riding?

One of the strands of wire that are braided to form a cable had fractures in them.

The five elevator companies are:

2. Hitachi Building Systems Co.

3. Fujitec Co

4. Mitsubishi Electric Building Techno-Service Co.

5. Toshiba Elevator and Building Systems Corp

An April 4th fire was caused by

an Otis-made elevator in the Roppongi Hills Mori Tower forcing hundreds of people to evacuate. A subsequent investigaton found cable problems in 80 of their roughly 50,000 lifts.

Taking the stairs might not just be a better health alternative but the only way to stay alive.

How often do you ride an elevator?
