Japan’s Top Patent Producers

It is said that Japan never has an original idea, but rather takes the ideas of others and improves on them.

Maybe so…but improvements are indeed made. And some companies are better at it than others.

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. was the best last year at coming up with new ideas with 4,193 new patents.

Matsushita Electric had the highest number of patents in the areas of electronics, components and appliances. Toshiba Corp. was second.us.patent.jpg

Nissan Motor Co was tops among car makers and 13th overall with 1,604 patents.

Toyota was 17th overall with 1,190.

The top-ranked foreign company –

South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co., 20th overall with 920 patents.

In the United States, foreign companies account for over half of all applications for new patents and Japan sits among the top. In Japan, however, foreign countries account for only 15% of all applications. A bit unequal, eh?

Do you think Japan can come up with any good original idea?
