Japan’s Oldest Geisha Turns 99 – Kokin Nee

Posted by Bill Belew on October 6th, 2007 in Japan | No Comments

Kokin Nee is Japan's oldest active geisha.

She turned 99 yesterday.

For 80 years she was a geisha, played the samisen, sang kouta, and led the charge of the country's 2,800 younger geisha.

She hopes to give a performance next year for her 100th birthday.

She was born in 1909. The math doesn't add up because in the olden days,kokin.nee.jpg counting ages started at 1 from birth.

98, 99…she's old…and still entertaining.
