Japan’s Marubeni Brings Biodiesel to Brazil

Marubeni Corp. has brought online a plant in Brazil that uses soybeans, sunflowers, cotton seeds and animal fat to produce oil that can, in turn, be made into biodiesel fuel for trucks and other heavy duty vehicles in the country.

The Japanese trading house wants to slide out 400,000 tons of biodiesel annually, boosting the annual output in Brazil to 2 million tons of fuel, double the domestic domand, by the end of this year.

The factory was built in a joint venture with a Dutch grain trader – Agrenco Corp.

Biofuel – what's it cost to convert the agricultural products in terms of money and fossil fuel? Is it worth it?
