Japan’s 5 Political Parties

Posted by Bill Belew on May 4th, 2010 in Japan | Comments Off

Japan has five political parties but one has always been dominant. Even when coalition cabinets are formed, the Liberal Democratic Party controls.

It sounds like this party is liberal and democratic, but it couldn't be farther from the truth. They are made up of a bunch of old cronies steeped in bureaucracy and totally resistant to change.

Remember…Japan is a land of opposites…liberal = ultra conservative. Democratice = what we decide is what you will decide.

The other four parties are:

1. Social Democratic Party – when I was there, a loud-mouthed woman named Doi led them. They are the agents of change…though not always good and NOT social as in socialism.

2. Komeito – a splinter group of the LDP.

3. The Democratic Party of Japan

4. The Japanese Communist Party – they are what they sound like.

Many Japanese would like to see a Republican/Democratic/Independent system like there is in the states….but those days are far far away.
