Japanese whalers sail out again

Hunting for whales reportedly dates back to prehistoric times. Whales were hunted for their oil, their meat, their fat and even the bones were put to use, like in this game made from whale bones.
After World War II, it was very popular in Japan to eat whale. But if you saw the earlier post about the Mega Burgers of Japans McDonalds, then I think we all know what the current generations prefer to eat. Only a few fancy restaurants still serve whale.
In fact, it’s illegal to hunt for whales since 1986. And yet, the Japanese whaling fleet is once again heading for the Antarctic, where they are planning to catch close to 1000 whales. Officials say these whales are used for research, which is why they are allowed to sail out. But many suspect it is a cover up for commercial whaling and research can be done without killing the whale.
Greenpeace is doing their part to try and stop the whaling boats. Last year they managed to disrupt the ship so thoroughly, they were forced to head back home with only half of their catch. But even if they succeed again this year, will something so ingrained in Japanese culture ever be stopped?
