Japanese Population Declines for 2nd Straight Year

Japan's population is declining.

There are 1,554 less people in Japan than there were a year ago.

The elderly, those 65 or older made up 21% of the country, up from 20.3%.

Deaths were up to an all-time high- 1,081,174, almost 9000 more than the previous year.

Births were up, too…by 26,384 from the previous year.japan.population.decline.jpg

Natural increase of population was 10,743….so, to be honest, I am not sure how the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications came up with an overall

population decline.

Half of the country's 127,053,471 people were in the three major urban areas of Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya – 63,539,362. It's the first time more than half of the country was in one of these three areas.

Females out populated males 51.1% – 48.9%.

Tokyo was the largest with 12,361,736.

Kanagawas (Yokohama) 8,741,025

Osaka – 8,665,105

Aichi – 7,145,614

Saitama – 7,042,044.

Tottori prefecture had the fewest people wth 606,695.

There were eleven cities with a population of 1 million or more –

Yokohama, Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo, Kobe, Kyoto, Fukuoka, Kawasaki, Saitama, Hiroshima and Sendai.

I think China probably has that many cities with nearly 10 million people in them.

Do you like the big city or the country better?
