Japanese Make Less Money

Japanese make less money now than they did 10 years ago but nearly twice as much as they did 25 years ago.

The gross national income per person peaked in Japan in 1997 with the income per person in Japan averaging 4,188,000 yen – I’ll call it $41,880 (100Yen = $1.00)

From 1997 to 2004 the Gross National Income per person dipped 5 times and rose twice.

After more than a decade of recession the the 2003 GNI finally bottomed out at 1994 levels.

The good news, however is that in 2004, the last year figures were available, GNI went up almost 2% and its highest 4 years.

With the economy starting to grow again, surely Japan can look forward to increased income averages.

Quick math – in a family where three generations are living together and 3-4 people are working at these averages, how much money is available as disposable income.

Answer: a LOT.
