Japanese Will Mourn Steve Irwin, Too

Posted by Bill Belew on September 5th, 2006 in Japan | No Comments

I kept hoping it was April 1st. After all, Steve Irwin had ‘died’ many times before, all of them myths, of course.

CNN reported that Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray while filming footage for a child’s show.

I spent nearly 20 years in Japan with my family. During that time, I never watched TV. The key word there is never.

However, when my older son came back to the US from Japan to attend high school he got hooked on a TV program on the Animal Planet. He asked me many times to watch it with him

He said, "It’s about some crazy guy handling alligators."

I wasn’t the least bit interested…but, my son persisted.

We watched it together once and have been ‘bitten" since.

Steve Irwin was/is great. A real crack-up and educator, too.

Please, somebody tell me that it’s April 1st and this is a bad joke.

I was in shock when I heard about his death. I always watched his programs. I never forget the exictement in his voice when he spoke about any creature. Sorry that we lost a great man!

I was just informed of this terrible news last night by my room-mate. I was so sad.

I haven’t had a TV in about three years, and even I have seen his show wnough times to understand what a loss this is to both the animal and entertainment world. He was such an amazing character; so passionate about nature and animals

I do have to say though, I’m amazed that he hadn’t been killed by an animal years ago with all of the deadly wildlife he toyed with.

The saddest part is that he had a young family.

Indeed, we will miss him for a long time. He will be dearly missed.
