Japanese Companies Not Interested in “Freeters”
In Japan a freeter is someone who is between the ages of 15 and 35 and works part-time while often changing jobs.
These folks like the freedom that comes from the lack of committment to one company. They also like mooching off their parents.
The Japanese word for part-timer comes from the German arbeit. Frei is German for free…Freeter may be a combination of the frei and arbeiter.
For some reason, the Japanese love to butcher foreign words and smash them together to make their own word….anyway…
Some 2,149 companies(70% with more than 500 employeees) were surveyed and 560 responded.
88% of the companies said they were not interested in hiring freeters despite the number one concern of Japanese companies being ‘short of employees under 35 years old. 79% of the companies say they need more young blood.
Since Japan’s economy has turned upward, 40% of companies say they don’t have enough employees, compared to 26% a year ago.
Japan is not having kids the way they used to and the young folk, like in all generations, seem to be getting younger in attitude and committments.
Sooner or later, Japan will have to find the work force they need or continue to increase their efficiency.
My bet is on the latter.
