Japanese and North Korean Trade Hits Bottom

Posted by Bill Belew on October 31st, 2006 in Japan | No Comments

This is no surprise. In fact, in light of North Korea’s recent dumb attack, it is what Japan hoped for.

Trade between the two countries have hit a record low.

Total trade between the two countries was down 20% from a year before and the arrows are pointing downward still.

Japan imposed an all out ban on imports from North Korea on October 14th.

Japan will not hurt if they don’t do business with the DPRK. The DPRK will only feel the pain of no business with Japan if other countries follow Japan’s lead rather than pick up the slack that Japan has left.

I don’t know. Economic sanctions, in theory, should have an impact on a country. But, from where I sit, it just means life is tougher for the average folk, and business as usual for the idiots in charge.

I wonder if Japan’s sanctions will have any real affect on Kim and his regime.

What do you think?
