The International Music Products Association, also call NAMM (Somebody smarter than me can tell me why) released a state of the Music Industry report.

Some of its findings…

1. More than one half of all US households (52%) has at least one person at least 6 years old who plays a musical instrument.

2. Abt. 40% of US households have two musicians.

3. More women play an instrument than men…but not by much 51%-49%.

4. The fastest growing group of music makers in the US are between the ages of 18-34, up 5% from three years ago.

5. Parents are the number one reason why someone takes up an instrument -37%, followed by taking it up on one’s own – 29%, encouraged by a teacher – 17% or encouraged by someone else – 16%.

6. 75% of music players start before age 11.

7. 85% of Americans think music is an important part of their life

8. 82% of Americans wish they had learned and instrument and two/thirds are still interested in learning.

9. 85% of Americans believe if students make music at school, they will get better grades.

10. Americans buy more musical instruments than any other country…42% of all musical instruments are purchased in the US.

Number two to the US in buying and making music is Japan accounting for 15.6% of worldwide musical instrument purchases.

But then, Japan has only about 40% of the US population….Let’s see..2.5 x 15.6% and Japan will almost catch up with the US.
