Japan Proposes BRIC Pay More in United Nation’s Dues

BRIC…I just learned this today, too – is Brazil, Russia, India and China. I wonder why not CRIB or CIRB or BIRC or something else?

Anyway…

The Japanese government has submitted a proposal to the U.N. General Assembly’s 5th Committee (budgetary affairs) that these four countries pony up more in contributions to the UN fund.

Actually, Japan just thinks these countries should not receive the discounts they are receiving.BRIC.jpg

Brazil, Russia, India and China all have booming economies.

Consequently, Japan reasons they should not be given the same discounts as they have receiving.

Russia’s share of UN giving is 0.7%…it would rise to 1.0%. China’s share would go up to 3.9% from 2.7%.

Needless to say, China is expected to bulk a the proposal.

It makes good sense to me that if a country is benefiting more from doing business with the world, they ought to be giving back more.

What do you think?
