Japan Can’t Find a 3G Partner in China

China has not granted 3G licenses yet for network operation. Consequently Japan, ore
specifically NTT DoCoMo, the world’s second largest mobile telecomm carrier, cannot find a partner in China in the 3G business.

This, of course, puts NTT DoCoMo on hold while China scrambles to establish a 3G technology standard and then start issuing licenses to companies in China with NTT DoCoMo at #1 on their speed dial.

China says there is at least one Chinese telecom carrier that uses the WCDMA standard, the same one the Japanese use. But, the Chinese won’t tell which company it is?

What’s up with that? It sounds to me like the Chinese do NOT have a carrier but just want the Japanese to think they do?

China Moblie seems to be the most likely candidate to partner with DoCoMo…but it is still not determined.

In any event, companies in China, any telecom company in China, surely realizes how important it is to have the same technology standard as the Japanese if they want to have some sort of cooperation with the Japanese.

But is there a company in China? And how close are they to meeting Japan’s standard?

What do you think?
