Ichiro and Joe DiMaggio
It might be way too early to use Ichiro and Joe Dimaggio in the same sentence, but I reckon it might be on some people's minds. They just aren't saying. You know, jinxes and that sort of thing.
Ichiro, full name Ichiro Suzuki, slapped out more hits a couple of years ago (2004) in one season than any other player in baseball has ever done. His 262 hits in that one seaon broke an 84 year old record held by George Sisler.
Joe Dimaggio has a 66 year old streak that involves hitting..56 games in a row.
Pete Rose is the only ball player to come close with a 44 game hitting streak in 1978.
Ichiro has a 23 game hitting streak…his longest ever.
Granted he is not even half way there…but if anyone can do it, this slapper might just be the one. Another month+ and 30 some games and we'll know…or long before that.
Interesting note…if Ichiro's Japanese record were considered, and we know that the Japanese can play hard ball too, Ichiro would have 2700+ hits by now…and he is only 30. He could make it to 5,000 all-time.
Wouldn't that be a hoot?
Who's your favorite ball player?
