Honda Takes On Toyota
Of course, Honda wants to dethrone Toyota. And, THAT will not be easy. Nor will it come anytime soon. Toyota is not about to sit idle while Honda comes a clawing at it, either.
Toyota is bigger, richer and definitely has much more marketing muscle. Oh, and Toyota has the best cars on the planet, too.
Toyota’s Prius beat out Honda’s Insight in 1999, (107,897 – 666) despite the fact that the Insight gets 66 mpg.
Much of that had to do with the celebs showing up at the awards in a Prius, no?
Honda, could indeed use some marketing lessons. But, it seems Honda, for now anyway, is more concerned with engineering the finest product on the road.
But Toyota beat out Honda there, too in 2005 with 81 problems per 100 vehicles compared to Honda’s 112 per 100 vehicles.
CEO, Fukui is hoping that Honda’s new diesel will take over the Green Lead from Prius.
As for American companies, Fukui says, "They are too preoccupied with short-term profit." They need to be, in order to get out of the hole.
Japan has two major car players, not one, I think.
