Honda – Japan’s Other Major Car Player

In 1973, a junior engineer at Honda Motor Co. put the company on the US map with a Civic subcompact that met US clean-air standards withOUT a catalytic converter.

The engineer was Fukui Takeo and he was 28 at the time. Today, Fukui is Honda’s CEO.

At 61 years old, Fukui doesn’t seem to have lost his drive. He now has Honda aiming to produce a diesel engine for 2009 that he says will meet both new US limits AND more stringent CA rules on soot and nitrus oxide emissions and still get 30% better mileage than gasoline fueled cars.

Americans as well as the rest of the world want to be more friendly to the environment. They also want to go farther on the $3+ a gallon for gas that they pay.

Honda hopes to answer that demand.

I love my Honda. It has pep and great gas mileage. My son and I averaged 38mpg on a drive from FL to Dayton.

I can’t wait to see what Honda can do with the new diesel engine. But, I will probably be too old or too blind to drive by then.

How about you?
