GM Desperate to Stay Ahead of Toyota

GM is so desperate to stay ahead of Toyota as the world's number one carmaker that the company is flirting with the idea of buying up Chrysler.

GM is hurting so bad that they are closing 5 of their 31 auto-assembly plants. Chrysler is closing

Chrysler has 13 plants and plans to shut down one.gm.chrysler.jpg

Consolidation is what both companies need…but that would mean massive layoffs and eliminating some of the combined 11 brands the combined company would have.

Bothe companies are facing billions in health-care and pension costs.

GM could use the merger as leverage to get the UAW to negotiate a more reasonable contract or tell Chrysler workers to go packing.

GM could make it work. Chrysler workers would be hurt big time….and GM could hold off Toyota for a while….but not in profits.

Do you think it is a good idea for GM to more concentration in the North American market?
