Free Apple iPhone 3G.

Yup…

Softbank Mobile Corp. of Japan says it will effectively cut the price of Apple Inc.’s iPhone 3G to as low as 0 yen as part of its scheme of discounted service rates and special sales campaigns from now till the end of May. (Nikkei News – subscription)

Softbank Corp. aims to woo customers with a free Apple iPhone 3G.

New subscribers who sign up for a two-year contract will get an 8-gigabyte iPhone 3G for free instead of the usual Y23,040 ($250ish) via discounted service rates.

The 16GB model can be gotten for Y11,520 ($125ish).

Softbank Mobile will offer existing and new iPhone subscribers discounts on fixed-rate charges for data communications.

The current rate is Y5,985 ($65ish). The new two year rate Y4,410 ($50ish(

The iPhone is a big hit in Japan. It was launched last July.

I reckon it is time to move back to Japan IF’n I wanted an iPhone, which I don’t.
