China Halts Import of Unsafe Bourbon Potato Chips from Japan

Posted by Bill Belew on December 9th, 2007 in Japan | Comments Off

Japan-based Bourbon potato chips contain potassium bromate, an additive used in bread to enhance taste.

Too much potassium bromate could harm human's central nervous systems, blood and kidneys, in addition to being carcinogenic says China, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand. The United States and Japan don't mind if we are harmed or don't trust the research.

It seems unauthorized importers brought in some Bourbon Chips and tried to sell them.

95 kg (200lbs) were destroyed and further importation stopped.

The products were sold at a duty-free shop in Zhuhai across the bay from Hong Kong.

I don't know if I should be sorry for the 200 lbs of chips that were smashed or sorry that Bourbon Chips still have potassium bromate in them.

What do you think?
