Births Fall to 2nd-Lowest Level Since WWII
Japanese moms and dads made an estimated 1.09 million trips to the hospital last year to increase their family's size.
About that many babies were born in Japan last year.
The number is down roughly 3,000 from 2006 and is the second fewest number of newborns since World War II.
Births hit a record low 1.06 million in 2005 before rising for the first time in six years last year.
The Ministry of Health sees the downtrend continuing over the longer term because the number of birth giving machines are down.
Deaths increased by 22,000 in 2007 to just over 1.1 million, the second most since World War II.![]()
