$850 Christmas Chicken to Defy Recession

christmaschicken.jpgThe Christmas chicken is defying the recession. You read right. It’s not the bear or the bull. It’s the chicken that is doing the defying.

I have heard that Japan sells more Kentucky Fried Chicken in December, around Christmas time, than it does the whole rest of the year. Go figure. I mean, don’t Americans all eat KFC on Christmas day? Um, no.

Takashimaya Co is offering a truffle-stuffed roast chicken for customers willing to forgo KFC and go high-end cock-a-doodler. One chicken – Y84,000 ($850).

Takashimaya has ordered capons from France to arrive on Christmas Eve (via sleigh?) and will fill the chickens with black truffles, foie gras, white sausage and chestnuts (roasting on an open fire.)

Takashimaya says the fragrant featherless meat will not be heavy, but juicy and perfect for a party. Um, yeah…the seller of an $850 chicken would say that.

Japan’s middle class has cut back on spending in general because of the recent oil spike (that has since dipped back down) and the global economic crisis (that China is propping up with $600 Billion).

The alternative, dating back to the 1970s is to head to the nearest KFC for a roast chicken, cake, salad and special plate for Y5,300. ($55.)

$55 for KFC? I think both options are robbery.
