80-year old man cycles cross country, gets killed by truck on last home stretch

80-years old and biking across country. Amazing!

More amazing is that after biking for nearly 14 months, the fellow was hit by a truck and killed just 40 kilometers (25 miles) from home…

What is it they say? Most accidents happen within 25 miles of home? (Of course, people spend most of their lives within 25 miles of their home, too.)

Kamesaburo Harano was hit by a truck from behind while riding along a curved section in a tunnel.

I once rode my bike across Japan…from Kagoshima to Niigata. Japan does NOT have biker friendly streets…in the city, in the countryside, among the rice paddies or even in the mountains.japanese.old.man

I ALWAYS feared for my life…but was too young

and too stupid to give up on the venture.

At least Harano wasn’t young. 80 years is a long life, except in Japan, where 100 is attained by 1,000s.

Where have you been on your bicycle?
