6 Signs that Japanese Children are Getting Slower, Clumsier, Fatter
The Education, Science and Technology Ministry in Japan conducted a survey between May and October last year.
The survey measured physical ability, checked on sleeping and TV watching patterns as well as breakfast eating habits.
1. When comparing endurance among children who watch TV more than three hours a day with those who did not, EVERY group of children 8 years old or older who watched TV were slower than the children who did not watch TV so much.
2. Fitness level overall declined. Yomiuri Shimbun cited the example of boys and girls in 50 meter sprints. Both groups were .2 of a second slower than 20 years ago.
3. Teachers at the schools say that children cannot run straight during short distance runs at sports festivals.
4. Many children could not navigate turns in the track when necessary.
5. Children can no longer make four-level human pyramids.
6. More and more children fall from bars when trying gymnastics.
Japan has always been considered the picture of health, with their petite bodies and slim figures. Those days seem to be going the way of fast food, and missed breakfasts.
I guess we need new role models for fitness. But then which country will do?
