Japan is raising the standards of education for its elementary and junior high schools.

The Education Ministry has issued new guidelines for the nation's students that will increase time in the classroom for the first time in 40 years.

With the extra time –

1. More hours of science – 33% more. And the students know how to calculate that increase, too!

2. More hours of math – 22% more.

3. More class hours overall – 10% more.

4. More content – previously removed content to be restored.math.curriculum.japan.jpg

5. More English study – mandatory now for fifth and sixth graders.

The new curriculum will come into affect fully in 2011 and 2012. Some will take place next year.

Meanwhile, American students want to know if they can have mandatory 30 minute breaks every hour to use their cell phones, send and receive text messages. And, while they are at it, could they decrease the 6 hour school day to 3 hours, and have a two hour lunch break to boot.

Are sure that the new guidelines will enhance the ability of the students? How about their psychology in terms of inner personality. Because they are children that should have more time to play and to know about everything in the new world.
