5 Problems With Japan’s Nuclear Power Plant Exposed by Earthquake
Kashiwazaki Kariwa is the world's largest nuclear plant in terms of power output capacity.
It also got rattled around pretty well during this past weekend's earthquake.
Some serious weaknesses in the nuclear power alternative were exposed –
1. The alert was raised too late.
2. The power plant suffered burst pipes.
3. There were water leaks
4. There was radioactive spillage.
5. The smoke announced the biggest problems, NOT the officials – more distrust.
Leaks were announced 12 hours after the tremblor but 'were within safety standards.'
If it was safe, why wasn't it announced earlier? Or did officials take their time because it was safe?
Distrust.
6. 50 cases of "malfunctioning and trouble" had been found.
But…. four of the plant's seven reactors that were running at the time of the quake, were all shut down automatically by the plant's anti-quake safety mechanism.
At least one thing went right.
Do you think nuclear power is the problem or the problem is with the people who 'control' it?
